Isopodium News: A Little Tour
My mum made a little tour of our isopod vivariums and I am happy to share it with you all. I think they did an excellent job of describing our isobabes. I hope you enjoy it!
A quick note about a few things that my mum mentioned.
Our Dairy Cows do try to nibble on us to determine if we are food for them. It does not hurt and they cannot actually bite us, but if they were allowed to nibble in the same place for an extended time, they could break through our top layer of skin! This breed needs a lot of protein and food in general since they reproduce year-round and have huge clutches of babies. Mum left the lotus seed pod that you saw in the vivarium, but upsidedown in a different spot and placed a new one in the old spot.
Our wild caught isobabes came with some hitchhikers! They had predatory and wood mites living on/with them outside and their population has boomed since we have had them inside. These kinds of mites are not a threat to our isobabes; they are actually really good clean-up crew members along with our Springtails. Here is a link with more information about various mites that can be found in vivariums. These mites have spread to two of the three other enclosures and it is only a matter of time before all four enclosures have them!
And finally, here are two pictures of me making friends with one of our native isopods outside. I left this one outside where I found them, but they sure were a cutie-babe.
